Rock of Ages Guiding Light Program

"To keep a lamp burning we have to keep putting oil in it."
-Mother Theresa

In January of this year, Rock of Age School saw its first graduating class. 17 students confidently completed their PLE (Primary Leaving Exam) and did spectacularly well, with seven students earning highest honors and 10 earning honors. Each of these students were blessed abundantly by being sponsored through Hands4Uganda beyond their primary education at Rock of Ages and are currently enrolled in various high schools throughout Uganda.

January 2018 is quickly upon us and Rock of Ages will see another 20 students graduate.  Students who have worked hard and are excited about the opportunity to continue their education and who will need additional financial support to go on to high school.

Rock of Ages P7 Graduating Class of 2017

A high school education costs approximately $1,000 per year per student.  The first year is the most expensive with strict requirements for basic necessities such as a mattress to sleep; towels to bathe; a fork, spoon, and knife to eat - along with school supplies, books and uniforms totaling approximately $150.

This Giving Tuesday, we ask you to consider donating to the Hands4Uganda “Guiding Light” program and help keep the lamp burning for the graduating class of 2018.

Of course we would be thrilled if you could provide the full sponsorship of a high school student at just $80/month; however, your one-time donation of any amount is greatly appreciated.

Do you have a heart for the children of ROA? Would you like to be more involved with H4U? Maybe you want to volunteer, but aren’t sure where to start? Rest assured you have a talent that we can put to use.  This is your opportunity to become a H4U Ambassador!

Take this opportunity and let your time and talents lead you in a direction that is right for you.  Perhaps you are interested in hosting a fundraiser for H4U? Let’s chat about some ideas! We will help set it up and give you all of the promotional materials you may need.

Maybe you are part of an organization that is looking to support a mission outreach? Hosting a sponsorship day would be perfect! We will provide the sponsorship packets and any other materials you may need.

Perhaps you don’t want to play a direct part in a specific project, but can help us set up a date to present to your church/donating body.  We will do all of the work with your introduction!

As we move towards building a new school facility it is vital to ROA and H4U that we have every student sponsored and raise the additional funds necessary to start construction. The possibilities are limitless as to where you can help us expand our outreach.

Please contact Ariane Drake and become a H4U Ambassador today!

Ensuring Students Eat During School Break

posted May 6, 2017, 1:17 PM by Ariane Drake

On April 27th we began a fundraising campaign through Facebook, inviting our page followers to donate to the "Matching Grant - Fill Our Tummies" fundraiser. A generous donor had given H4U $680 as a matching grant to help provide extra lunches and cover additional costs for the students at ROA during their month long quarterly break.

Recently, war refugees from neighboring South Sudan have been pouring into Uganda- stressing food supplies that were already dwindling due to a prolonged drought in the region. Food prices have nearly tripled over the past few months, forcing many families to go without.

Students were already coming to class hungry, as for many, their only meal of the day was school lunch. The month long quarterly break began May 1st and we are happy to say that H4U has been able to continue to provide students with their school lunch each day throughout this time thanks to the amazing support of our donors!

The fundraiser officially ended on May 3rd and with in that timeframe we raised a total of $1775 inkling the original donation of $680!

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who supported this fundraiser to help keep the tummies of our Rock of Ages students full!

A Glance at the 2017 Academic School Year

posted Oct 28, 2016, 4:34 PM by Karla Marie   [ updated Apr 11, 2017, 1:29 PM by Ariane Drake ]

The 2017 academic year is off and running. All P6 and P7 students returned to ROA on January 23 while Nursery through P5 returned one week later on February 6. Sixteen news students have enrolled in baby class for the 2017 academic year and this number is expected to rise throughout the first few weeks of the term.

Students who graduated from the nursery program in 2016 passing baby, middle, and top class are now starting their first year of primary education. Their new schedule is quite a change as they will no longer be in class half a day but will arrive at 7:00 am and return home at 5:00 pm. At this level students begin a curriculum that involves much independent work with necessary assistance from teachers. This marks the beginning of their preparation for the Primary Leaving Exam that they will take place once they complete P7.
